1)       Whole class activity:  Access the first site and challenge the whole class to build a number larger than Hacker’s using the given digits.  Have students share their answers and justify their choices based on their knowledge of place value.  Then, as a class, answer the online question.

1)      Whole Class Practice:  Use the website to build numbers by placing each digit in the correct place value location.

 

2)      Individual Activity:  Have each student write down a number of their choice. (Set parameters for how many digits the number should contain.)  Then, have each student write directions, similar to the whole class practice activity, that someone else could follow to create that number by placing digits in the correct place value locations.

Apple on ComputerIn this age of accountability, it is more important than ever to be able to justify the tools and techniques we use in our classrooms with solid research.  So, not only am I an advocate of teaching with online interactive content because I saw the positive effects it had in my classroom but also because it is supported by a myriad of research studies.  Here is a sampling of that research:

 

 Research by Middleton & Murray shows:

·         Students whose teachers were high level users of technology in the classroom scored significantly better than did students whose teachers were low level users of technology in the classroom. (Teachers who were high level users were differentiated from teachers who were low level users in terms of frequency and extent of use of computers with students, instructional methods used with technology, attitude toward the value of technology for learning, variety of uses of technology, and perception of influence of technology on student learning and behavior.)

1) Display the graph paper image from the first link for the whole class. Then, with your interactive white board pen or with a marker after projecting the image on a dry erase board, place a dot somewhere on the paper. Tell your students that in four minutes you are going to erase the dot and turn off the projector. Then, you are going to project the image again and call on a student, and you expect them to be able to place the dot in the same location.
*Note: Brainstorming for ideas on how to find the location to place the dot can be done individually, with partners, or in groups.
